Clonfert (Irish: Cluain Fearta) is a small village in east County Galway.

It is half way between Ballinasloe and Portumna. Clonfert Cathedral was erected in the 12th century at the site of an earlier 6th century church founded by Saint Brendan, which was associated with a monastery he founded and at which he was buried. His tomb still lies on the ground in front of the door.

In 2013, a tornado (!) stroke in Clonfert and did massive damages in the neighborhood, but left the Cathedral unscathed. Please visit this article by Donal Burke (link) for the complete story of this event.
